On this date, June 13, in 1990, Bernadette Locke becomes the first female Division I coach of a men’s basketball team when she joins the University of Kentucky as an assistant coach to Rick Pitino.
Bernadette Locke, the first female assistant to coach a men`s NCAA Division I basketball team, has already faced her biggest challenge. It didn`t come from her players, who probably were taking coaching instructions from a woman for the first time in their lives. Nor did it come from joining the otherwise all-male coaching fraternity.
